Journey to the Top: FAE USA

With such influences, it’s no surprise that Carera felt drawn to jobs in the heavy equipment industry, beginning with summer internships.

“When I was in high school and college, I was an intern every summer for an equipment dealer in my hometown in northern Italy,” he said. “I worked in the warehouse and parts department, as well as out in the field with the service techs and salespeople. My first ‘real job’ in the industry was an international marketing position in Bangkok, Thailand, for an Italian equipment manufacturer in their southeastern Asian Pacific office.”
From there, Carera’s career path led him to export sales manager positions in Italy, the Netherlands and Chicago, where he sold tillage products and managed OEM accounts for one of the largest agricultural equipment manufacturers in the world.

In 2005, Carera joined the FAE Group as CEO of FAE USA and was tasked with helping the company establish a strong presence in America. The Italian manufacturer is a pioneer of land management equipment and PTO-driven road construction attachments designed for heavy industrial applications, with high productivity and easy serviceability in mind.

“When I first started as CEO of FAE USA, the company was in its infancy in the United States, so my job was to establish the headquarters and a strong sales and service team,” he said. “Now, FAE USA is a large corporation in Flowery Branch, Georgia, with a very solid structure and organization, just like its parent company, FAE Group in Italy.”

In his role as CEO, Carera’s duties include determining the company’s vision and strategies, hiring the right people to implement those strategies, developing a strong company culture, and successfully communicating it all to his team. He also interacts with the company’s OEMs and key accounts, part of a boots-on-the-ground approach that’s served both Carera and FAE USA well.

“I am a boots-on-the-ground kind of person and I like to be in the field at all times, including visiting dealers and attending demos and trade shows,” he said. “This approach helps me to stay up to date about the latest developments in the industry.”

Even after a lifetime in the industry, Carera is as enthusiastic as ever about the work that he does.

“One of the most exciting things to me is that we help to develop and build the world,” he said. “We offer solutions that you can look back and see the results of the work you did with a quality and productive machine. It is very rewarding to me to see happy and profitable customers. And I really like working for a company that sets the industry standards and is constantly investing in developing new products.”
Carera is just as enthusiastic about promoting the industry to people who may be interested in a heavy equipment career.

“I enjoy promoting this industry, especially to younger people,” he said. “The heavy equipment sector offers great opportunities to knowledgeable and passionate people – and the industry is always evolving, which makes our jobs exciting. The best advice I can give to people entering the field is to start from the bottom, be humble, get your hands dirty and be very willing to learn every aspect of the business. The opportunities to move up are always available.”

When he’s not busy fulfilling his duties as CEO of FAE USA, Carera enjoys spending time with his wife and son, playing tennis and riding motocross dirt bikes in the Georgia woods. Carera has traveled to over 70 countries around the globe for business and speaks three languages: English, Spanish, and Italian.
