Let's Shake Things Up a Little

If you’re drawn to adventure as I am, AED’s got just the ride for us while we continue moving through unchartered territory.

When I was growing up on a farm and then into young adulthood, my dad would explain to us how life was an adventure. That was because of the seasonal changes we experienced living in Iowa, farming, and our summer vacations of travel.
When my wife and I made the big move to Columbus, Ohio, shortly after being married, that was a huge step for both of us. When we moved to Jackson, Miss., that was another big step into the unknown. When we take a risk, brave into the unknown, and get out of our comfort zone, it becomes an adventure. And we all love adventure to some degree.
Business is an adventure, just like life is. I think we were made for adventure, which is why the business joy ride can get so interesting. We can learn, experience, and see so much when we are out there in the business world. There is always something new around the corner. There are new relationships that will influence us. How about new markets that can open up with new product? We are made with an appetite for learning and discovery of all the things that the world has to offer.
January was a great new adventure for many of us as we made the trip to San Antonio. This was my first Start Us Up, USA! rally, and what an event that was! Our industry is facing huge challenges, and that doesn’t promise to change anytime soon. This event was set out for the challenge of getting our message to the decision makers in Washington. The reality is that we are in the roughest era of our lifetime and that our equipment is standing idly by while our infrastructure is crumbling and our productivity is losing its edge to other countries. The Web site atstartusupusa.org will help you understand the challenges and opportunities there are for you to get involved with.
Please challenge yourself to think about going to Washington D.C., April 14 and 15. What an adventure that will be for you! Washington is a beautiful place that has something new around every corner. What a difference you can make as an ambassador for your own region, where you can influence those lawmakers into understanding some of the real issues impacting our families, communities and businesses. This could be one of the most important events you attend this year. Our industry needs you. Come join the adventure.
Finally, as I began, we are made for adventure. With adventure comes learning. The AED Foundation can help you meet your needs for most any development challenge you may have in your business today. Their primary mission is workforce development and training. Knowing you have the right people and working with them in their developmental journey will be most rewarding for them and your business. I encourage you to have a development plan that complements your goals for this year.
This will be another exciting year. Exciting because we know the ride is rough out there. How are you going to live the adventure, and what are we going to look like on the other side? I’d like to hear your thoughts – e-mail me at denny@vermeermidsouth.com.
