JRB Attachments will introduce four new attachments at AED's CONDEX trade show.

While attachments add versatility to equipment, it’s the quick coupler that’s the unsung hero in the arrangement. The advent of the quick coupler was really the start of convenience in the industry. Instead of pounding pins and tying up the shop, dealers can switch attachments in a breeze with quick couplers. But not all quick couplers are created equal. JRB Attachments, a quick coupler and attachments manufacturer for the mobile construction equipment industry knows that – and they plan to prove it to dealers at AED’s Annual Meeting & CONDEX Jan. 14-17 in San Diego. JRB Attachments, headquartered in Akron, Ohio, was started by J. Randall Baird in 1983. Baird’s first product to market was a wheel loader coupler that kept the original pin on the attachment closer to the machine, thereby protecting machine performance. “Quick couplers provide versatility and productivity that contractors and dealers are looking for without greatly reducing machine performance,” said David Crummy, vice president of marketing for JRB. JRB products are often used with hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders and tractor loader backhoes. In 2004, JRB was acquired by Paladin, a Dover Corp. company and the largest independent manufacturer of attachments and tools used in the heavy and light mobile construction equipment market as well as in demolition, recycling, forestry and utility applications. JRB, C&P, Badger and CustomWorks comprise the Paladin Heavy Construction group. The company attributes its success in the marketplace to five strategic assets: People, Application Expertise, Engineering, Manufacturing and New Product Development.“We are universally known as the leader in the design, manufacturing and sale of wheel loader quick couplers,” said Crummy. “And now we’re excited to have the opportunity to introduce game-changing products that will set us apart from our competition – products we believe dealers will be excited about and contractors will demand from their dealers.” JRB will introduce four new attachments at the Paladin booth, No. 1112, at AED’s CONDEX trade show in conjunction with the San Diego convention: The PowerGrip and VersaLoc for excavators, and the Multi Pick-Up Coupler and LincLoc for wheel loaders. “We have a much higher focus on product innovation,” said Mats Ceder, director of business development. “We want to develop products around our customers’ unmet needs – and to come out with new products that are game-changers that meet or exceed the needs of our customers is extraordinary.”Crummy said that JRB is spending tremendous amounts of resources on research and development to introduce these kinds of innovative new products. “We don’t want to just compete on price,” Ceder said. “We want to provide products that dealers and end users need.” Innovative Products
The PowerGrip is a versatile multipurpose bucket that is used as a trenching, grading or clamshell bucket for excavators and backhoes up to 45,000 pounds. This ready-to-use, pin-on attachment is easy to install and operate. With one attachment, an operator can perform multiple tasks without ever leaving the cab. The versatility of the PowerGrip means increased productivity, less downtime and improved jobsite safety.
PowerGrip is made from high-strength, abrasion-resistant steel. All moving parts are safely enclosed in a protective hinge to keep debris and contaminates out of the inner workings of the enclosed actuator. An integral cross-port relief valve is built-in for overload protection.Additional features include: no obstructing crossbar in the jaw or bucket shell, consistent holding force through 120 degrees of movement, and equal torque on both ends to prevent jaw twisting. The Multi Pick-up Coupler uses a two-cylinder design that accommodates any number of “quick hitch” style attachments. In a matter of seconds, an operator can switch from a bucket to a boom, forklift, broom or other attachment without having to leave the cab or seek assistance from additional personnel. The Multi Pick-up Coupler is designed to maximize load transfer and help maintain machine performance. This lower offset improves performance and results in reduced breakout force.A Name You Trust
One thing that sets JRB apart from other attachment manufacturers is the company’s relationship with other OEMs in the industry. “We are one of the few coupler manufacturers that have obtained engineering approval from major construction original equipment manufacturers,” said Crummy. “We also have custom facilities located [onsite] at various equipment manufacturers, though not across the board, that allow us to install our couplers on the machines and have them shipped directly to the end user.” Engineering, says Crummy, is at the core of everything JRB produces. The company adheres to OEM standards to ensure maximum versatility, efficiency and safety. All product designs and enhancements are subject to rigid safety review processes and extensive field-testing before they are released for commercial use.In addition, JRB provides its distributor network with complete support including training, sales and field technical assistance. JRB does not sell direct to end users. “We stand behind our product and have an excellent working relationship with our dealers,” said Crummy. “If you look at our sales history over the past 15 years, our top 25 dealers haven’t changed a lot. These are the same dealers we’ve been doing business with since 1983. I believe it speaks to our quality of product and, more important, how well we provide service to our distributors.”The company conducts seminars on a broad range of issues related to the safe installation, operation and maintenance of couplers for dealers, construction firms, end users and other attendees. “I don’t know an attachment manufacturer today that provides some of the things we do for dealers, such as the field service personnel, backup manuals, our safety training and seminars,” he said. JRB representatives are enthusiastic about the 2009 AED Annual Meeting & CONDEX.
“We always look forward to the AED show,” said Crummy. “A lot of our good dealers are AED dealers and the show gives us a chance to spend quality time with them.” The company, an AED member since 1984, is pleased to be sponsoring the table wine at the Chairman’s Inaugural Dinner on Friday, Jan. 16 in celebration of its 25th anniversary.“This is a big deal for us this year with four new products and our anniversary,” said Ceder. “We’re happy to give something back to our dealers and to AED.”
