SmartEquip's technology will be used to remove inefficiency from the relationship between suppliers, dealers and their customers.

Cat Rental Stores have adopted SmartEquip's SmartPortal technology as a business management solution used to streamline aftermarket product support and electronic procurement for equipment supplied by other companies. Caterpillar made the announcement on Sept. 13.

"The Cat project is the next step in the evolution of the SmartEquip network [that is already] being used at United Rentals, Sunbelt and Volvo Rents," said Phil Silver, vice president, strategic accounts and alliances at SmartEquip. "What SmartEquip has been building is an industry network that takes operational and transactional inefficiency out of the relationship between suppliers, dealers and their customers."

The initiative is designed to provide Cat Rental Stores with a consolidated multivendor electronic product support and procurement platform. Using the SmartEquip Network, the technology enables Allied Vendors to provide Cat Rental Stores with superior parts identification and ordering capabilities in real time; the ability to order equipment electronically; intelligent, self-updating interactive service support; and a standardized warranty submission process.

"The use of the SmartEquip business management solution within Cat Rental Stores will drive efficiencies, ultimately leading to lower operating costs," said Dale Hill, Caterpillar senior rental consultant.

Initially, the SmartPortal will launch more than a dozen Caterpillar Preferred Allied Vendors currently on SmartEquip's network, including JLG, Mi-T-M, Multiquip, Sullair, Sullivan, Magnum Products and Wacker.

"The network can support much more than just an electronic parts catalog," said Mike Birch, director of OEM sales for SmartEquip. "It can support things like warranty submission, product support information and bulletins which can be efficiently delivered to a group."
