BLS Enterprises recently marked its 20th anniversary. The company began producing track pads when its customer K-Five Construction, a Chicago-based roadbuilder, was unable to obtain quality track pads. K-Five needed the rubber pads for a Barber-Greene Model 265 asphalt paver.
"Rubber was chunking off and peeling off the pad," says Barry Stoughton, president and founder of BLS. "It was so bad they had to hire a laborer to pick rubber pieces out of the asphalt so it wouldn't become embedded in the pavement."
Since a previous customer had trouble with rubber tires flaking apart, Stoughton already had a solution.
"I convinced my customer we could substitute polyurethane bonded to a track pad for rubber," says Stoughton. "The rubber tracks had lasted one year, but our new ones lasted 2½ years."
In 1986, BLS sold one size pad, but today provides Tufpads for more than 400 different machines. The company has also expanded its product offerings.
"Three years ago, we came up with a new product, the BLS Poly Bolt-On track pads, which eliminate the need to replace the grousers every time," says Stoughton. "We have also developed a new durable Tufpads Blues product that field tests proved last up to 30 percent longer than our premium polyurethane pads."
